The Characters.
Most pics are taken from the sequences of second OP, but there are also some that are not included in the sequences or spell out spoiler, so I deliberately search for them.
Celty Sturluson (セルティ・ストゥルルソン, Seruti Sutururuson)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
The resident Dullahan of Ikebukuro, commonly known as 'The Black Rider' or 'The Headless Biker', she used to roam the streets of Ireland with a headless horse and holds her head with one arm, until one day, she awakened with the said head gone, along with most of her memories. Her instincts brings her to Ikebukuro and with the horse disguised as a motorcycle, she roams the streets of the city looking for the stolen head.
She has no heart and perceives via unknown sensors that are not located on the head. The physical strength she possesses is above human, though not quite on par with Shizuo Heiwajima. Uh-huh. She is also capable of manipulating a shadow-like, durable substance to form objects ranging from gloves to chariots at her will. If not that, she still can be a badass with
Celty lives with Shinra Kishitani, and works as an underground courier. She wears a helmet when she goes out and communicates via a PDA, also enjoys online chatting, television and DVDs. Yeah, I know.
Mikado Ryūgamine (竜ヶ峰 帝人, Ryūgamine Mikado?)
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga
A first year high school boy a.k.a timid newcomer who moved to Ikebukuro with the encouragement of his best friend, Masaomi Kida. Mikado tries hard to change his image but so far he has not had any luck, although he does get up enough courage to become the Class Representative along with Anri. Mikado has had moments where he speaks his mind, and Masaomi claims to admire this about him. He seems to be infatuated with Anri Sonohara, but has never found a chance to tell her.
Wait, that's it? O_o?? Let me get this straight, Wikipedia gives longer explanations on him,
Masaomi Kida (紀田 正臣, Kida Masaomi)
Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano
A resident of Ikebukuro and Mikado Ryūgamine's best friend from childhood, he was the one who encouraged Mikado to come to Ikebukuro. Masaomi is an extremely hyper fellow who loves sprinkling English in his sentences and hitting on older girls, but he seems to fail at it. He claims there is a love triangle between Mikado, Anri, and himself, and he's not above flirting with Anri, much to Mikado's chagrin.
His name Righteous Vassal works a pair with Mikado's name. He also cannot tell a joke to save his life, not that it stops him from trying though. =_=;
Anri Sonohara (園原 杏里, Sonohara Anri)
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa
A bespectacled, shy girl who attends the same school as Mikado and Masaomi and eventually befriends them. She is the class representative along with Mikado. She is rather quiet and timid and seems very close to Kida and Mikado, but she tends to keep to herself. Though she knows Kida and Mikado's feelings for her, she considers herself unable to feel "love" towards either of them.
She is very busty and cute, which makes her somewhat popular, even though she feels uneasy about it. She feels as if she needs to rely on somebody to move on, and thus considers herself a parasite.
Izaya Orihara (折原 臨也, Orihara Izaya)
Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya
Ikebukuro's mysterious Knowledge Broker who sells information for his own enjoyment and the main antagonist a.k.a the ultimate Troll a.k.a the most jerkass character a.k.a the magnificent bastard of the series. Claims to love all humanity (except Heiwajima Shizuo, who he cannot manipulate due to being a complete simpleton) — love which he expresses by playing/manipulating/messing with people and putting them in miserable conditions at every opportunity he gets and observing their reactions; for the lulz. Like, what. But then, this is the one that manipulates people and supernatural beings just because he can. Hell, he loves playing mind games (and chess-shogi-reversi-go-cards-matches against himself when he is well, bored) and seems to be one step ahead of everybody else at times.
He attended Raira Academy with Shizuo, Shinra and Kadota. According to Shinra, Izaya and Shizuo hated each other with a passion almost from the point they met. He gives Shizuo constant problems, from daily attacks from gangs to framing him for crimes. He is also a master of parkour, in which he teaches it to himself to outrun Shizuo, and also quite skilled with his flick-blade, heck, he even shaves a gang member's head bald without him noticing it. His name comes from a combination of the biblical Isaiah and Japanese for "the one who looks over the crowd." Kind of fitting, really.
Despite being a freaking badass (he once gets hit with a freaking trash can flat on the face and stands up moments later no worse nor wear, how's that?), and the walking epitome of evil psycho (his laugh when he stomps on the cellphone is not something you want to hear in the middle of the night) he is the most popular character of the show. As well as one of my favorite/biases alongside the enemy Shizuo (or in Izaya's words: "Shizu-chan~"). Wait, you cannot tell?
Shizuo Heiwajima (平和島 静雄, Heiwajima Shizuo)
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono
A man who is always seen to wear sunglasses and a bartender's suit (he's not even a bartender, he works as a bodyguard for a debt collector in Ikebukuro); this is THE most fearsome man in Ikebukuro (Shizuo terrifies about half of Ikebukuro's population simply with his mere presence. The other half typically fails to connect him with his reputation until it's too late (after which they join the first half), and rage in human form. Shizuo has a hair trigger temper a.k.a very short fuse and a tendency to react to anything that sets him off with uncontrollable violence, which is only made worse by the fact that he also has Super Strength despite his simple and unrefined fighting skills. Expect to see flying vending machines, street signs, chairs, desks, a fridge, a flagpole, soccer goalposts, guardrails, mailboxes, trash cans, playground slides, motorcycles, the side door from Togusa's van, a crash barrier, a freeway sign...no wonder he is often called Ikebukuro's God of Destruction (occasionally with the added subtitle of "in a Bartender's Suit").
Even though he's used everything including the kitchen sink as a weapon/projectile, Shizuo seems to have a preference for street signs and vending machines, depending on how far away
He has a younger brother, Kasuka, who is a top idol under the showbiz name of Yuuhei Hanejima. Interestingly, the scout who ended up scouting his little brother Kasuka originally wanted to scout Shizuo. He is also a long-time acquaintance of Celty. His first and last name translates literally into "serene man" and "peaceful island" respectively. Must be the fact that Shizuo hates violence. Yes, really. And loathes the fact that he has violent unstoppable rages. Talk about the ultimate case of irony.
That is, if you happen to stumble upon/hear the screaming of "IIIIIII-ZAAAAAA-YAAAAA-KUUUUUUUN" or "IIIIIII-ZAAAAAA-YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA", walk the opposite direction. If your luck is even worse and witness the man himself flashing a slasher smile, snaps a small, thin object (like a pencil or cigarette) in half, drops it on the ground, and crushes it underfoot, which are his trademark before he go axe crazy and berserk, pray that he is not pissed off you (and that a certain Izaya is a good distance off you). This is a badass violent incarnation we're talking here. And also, one that is not phased at all at a ballpoint pen piercing straight through the palm of his hand. "Hmm... if I pull it out, it'll bleed. Should I get a bandage? Or maybe superglue?"
Oh! Do bear in mind that flying vending machines are Shizuo's special way of saying hello. He is badass like that, after all. And I'm bias like that, this is personal favorite alongside the foe Izaya, bear with me.
Shinra Kishitani (岸谷 新羅, Kishitani Shinra)
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama
The young back alley a.k.a underground a.k.a unlicensed doctor of Ikebukuro who lives with
He went to the same primary school as Shizuo, and has since then been interested in his unlimited strength in times of anger. In fact, he rather enjoys it when Shizuo makes use of his strength. He went to the same middle school as Izaya and has been friends with him since then. The three even goes to Raira Academy on high school. He is amused by Shizuo and Izaya's fights.
His father is a
Simon Brezhnev (サイモン・ブレジネフ, Saimon Burejinefu)
Voiced by: Takaya Kuroda
A tall Badass Black Russian who came to the city to help out his Russian friend who runs a sushi shop called 'Russian Sushi' thus works as a sushi hawker. His real name is Semyon (Russian Семён) but everyone just calls him by the name "Simon".
Kida: His name's Simon. He's a Russian of African descent. He works as a tout for a Russian sushi shop here.
Mikado: ...I'm sorry, but there are just so many things wrong with what you just said.
Being an immigrant, his Japanese isn't very good and his physical appearance actually frightens some people, thus his apparent inability to bring people to the restaurant is one of the running gag in the show. Despite, he's a kind and intelligent man who only wants customers to visit the restaurant.
Even though he is a friendly person, it has been shown that he is a force to be reckoned with as he is able to stop a fight with a man his size with just a single arm. Heck, this the only man in Ikebukuro who can physically stop THE Heiwajima Shizuo and he does it casually and routinely. Luckily, he's very friendly and peaceful, so it stops here. He once leaps down from the seventh floor of an apartment building and, of course, lands safely. He says that the aforementioned leaping off the building was only because he was making a delivery to a client on the top floor when he saw the fight. Talk about badass.
Still, Simon doesn't even like talking about violence, and only uses his martial arts skills to either defend himself or break up a fight. He also only wants to assure you that his sushi has absolutely no human meat in it, only 100% fish non-human ingredients. This is probably true, as Simon is a really nice guy, but that doesn't stop people from speculating, the fact that he has on two occasions threatened several yellow scarves who were mugging people that he'd turn them into sushi does not help. People behave when he's around, though, so that's something.
Kyohei Kadota (門田 京平, Kadota Kyōhei)
Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura
Leader of a pretty small-time gang consisting of himself, Erika, Walker, and Saburo, he also works as a tile layer with flexible work hours. Originally part of the Blue Squares, he is now a member of Dollars. He has a nickname called "Dotachin" which is used by several characters in the series (mostly Izaya and Erika). He is not that bad-looking without that hat obscuring his eyes, and not frowning. He is badass too, like other cast in the show, but in his own way considering he is pretty much the sole possessor of sanity in Ikebukuro. That counts on something, no?
His name is a reference to Dengeki Bunko light novelist Kadono Kouhei.
Walker Yumasaki (遊馬崎 ウォーカー, Yumasaki Wōkā)
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji
Like his female friend and companion, Erika, Walker is a very passionate otaku and manga reader. He and Erika are nearly always together. He also likes to perform torture by letting the victim to choose a light novel or manga, and carrying out the contents. How psycho is that? He seems to be carefree. He also keeps a wide dumb smile and have his eyes shut most of the time, though he does opens them briefly when he's planning to do something devious a.k.a being a complete badass otaku. But this smile can hide more than people can see at first glance. He was also a member of Blue Squares but quits with Kadota. He is a member of the anonymous online gang Dollars and Kadota's gang. Like Erika he is a very mysterious person.
His name is a reference to Dengeki Bunko light novelist Masaki Okayu.
Erika Karisawa (狩沢 絵理華, Karisawa Erika)
Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki
Erika is a very passionate otaku and manga reader. She and Walker are usually together and is equally enthusiastic about manga or novel inspired torture. As noted by Togusa, "I don't care what you do to him. Just don't use gasoline inside the car like you did that last time." Yep, badass is badass. It is noted she is a "fujoshi" or a yaoi fan. Like Izaya, she calls Kadota "Dotachin" and loves create weird nicknames, examples include Yumacchi, Iza-Iza/Izayan, Shizu-Shizu/Shizu-chan and Mikapuu. She is a member of the anonymous online gang Dollars and Kadota's gang. She was also a member of Blue Squares.
Her name is a reference to the Dengeki Bunko light novelists Mamizu Arisawa and Erika Nakamura.
Saburo Togusa (渡草 三郎, Togusa Saburō)
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima
The fourth member of Kyohei's gang, as well as the gang's official driver. A member of Dollars. An otaku but unlike Erika and Walker, the object of his obsession is the famous singer Ruri Hijiribe a.k.a his goddess. He was also a member of the Blue Squares, but quit with the others. Is an expert in
His name is a reference to Dengeki Bunko novelist Soichiro Watase.
Seiji Yagiri (矢霧 誠二, Yagiri Seiji)
Voiced by: Kazuma Horie
A classmate of Mikado's. He quits school claiming he has something more important to do with his life - to find his "love" and run away with her - and seems to rely on his sister's money for that. He is good-looking enough that when Kida meets him just before he drops out of school, he suggests that he join him and Mikado in picking up girls. His idea on love is kind of extreme a.k.a twisted at the same time and he is badass enough to stab THE Heiwajima Shizuo with pens. Hey, at least it works, okay.
Namie Yagiri (矢霧 波江, Yagiri Namie)
Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi
Chief of the 6th lab of Yagiri Pharmaceuticals and older sister of Seiji Yagiri — with whom she has a rather disturbing romantic attachment to. Uh. Yeah. Try listen to her monologue on her 'pure' love to her younger brother, and you can immediately tell how psycho she is. 'Nuff said. It's kind of a pity considering she is quite a beauty, hell even Izaya think she's foxy. Oh, well.
Seiji's lover. She resembles the disappeared Mika Harima, and has a scar around her neck. She claims that she doesn't have any memory of who she is. I'm not going to give more info on her as it will be a spoiler. Yep, not even the name, she's mysterious like that.
Shingen Kishitani (岸谷 森厳, Kishitani Shingen)
Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka
Shinra's father and source of most of his weirdness, Shingen was living in America up until recently, when he decided to return to Japan and impose himself on his son for reasons he has yet to disclose. Believing Tokyo's air to be terribly filthy and unfit for breathing, he opts to wear a gas mask 24/7. His personality ranges from childish for comic relief to intimidating, especially when in front of Izaya and Namie. But then, no one who looks that menacing should act that goofy, seriously. His face is never shown in the anime.
Kinnosuke Kuzuhara (葛原 金之助, Kuzuhara Kinnosuke)
Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara
Kinnosuke is, according to Shinra, a motorcycle policeman known for dealing with the most troublesome characters. He has been sent to Ikebukuro to deal with Celty, and he thinks of her merely as a monster. Often just a little bit too into chasing down suspects, to the point that he causes as many accidents as he prevents. He is very proud of the Police and of himself for warning Celty not to mess with them. He is known to be very persistant, as he and his men were able to follow Celty for a whole evening, something which eventually tired and scared her.
Saki Mikajima (三ヶ島 沙樹, Mikajima Saki)
Voiced by: Misato Fukuen
Saki is a girl who has a godlike idolization of Orihara Izaya. Saki worships the ground Izaya walks on, and even admits that if he told her to jump off a cliff and die, she would do so. Talk about devotion. That is, uh, badass in her own way, no?
Kasuka Heiwajima (平和島 幽, Heiwajima Kasuka)
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio
Shizuo Heiwajima's younger brother. He is a famous actor under the alias "Yūhei Hanejima". He was scouted to debut after saving the life of a talent scout from Shizuo, who apparently did not appreciate being talked to by that talent scout. While amazingly talented as an actor, Kasuka's natural demeanor is very robotic and unemotional. With the occasional mention of his brother aside, Kasuka usually keeps his personal and family life under wraps. Journalists who insist on interviewing his family usually find their cars mysteriously overturned (this is actually from the novel, but think it's worth mentioning lol).
His relationship with Shizuo is quite close despite the difference between them. He once gives 2 boxes of bartender suit to Shizuo in hope that he will not quit the job, and Shizuo treasures them much that he still wear the uniform even when he is no longer one. This, also, results in him goes berserk whenever the suit is ruined, as it pissed him off the most.

...Told you she's headless alright.
The three amigos~
They got a lot of picture together despite hating each other to the max. Talk about irony. Lol.
The Kadota gang. And Kadota is smiling (or is he smirking?). That's rare enough, okay.
The Characters'
I'll say this straight, almost every main character in the series are badass, in some way or another. Most notably are of course, Shizuo, Izaya, and Simon. But that doesn't mean others are not.
...especially the ones that looks like a mafia with an 'x' scar (not Kenshin Himura) on the cheek. You have been warned.
He's not happy. Uh-huh.
Warning. Simon's sporting the evil slasher smile of doom. Somebody call 911?
Walker opens his eyes!! The opened eyes of badass appears~!!
Shinra's evil smirk
Kida's death glare of fire made by pure awesomeness.
The devil's smile and the piercing stare of doom. Lethal combination of badassery.
"This won't kill me." Damn Izaya and the smug face of his.
There's reason why he's the magnificent bastard of the show. He's badass enough to smirk like that. Or jerkass enough. Whichever suits. Oh, read the sub too.
Yep. I don't think I can be as badass as that. Shizuo can, though.
Yup, total serious.
The sub there already tells everything.
It's THE Heiwajima Shizuo with the slasher smile of doom.
When you see this, it's basically 'Game Over'. 'Nuff said.
After all, he is ready to make you fly. Literally.
It's the power of the come-and-I'll-kill-you-off-one-by-one smile.
Uh-huh.
Read the sub. Check. The ultimate glare of doom. Check.
...re is the famous vending machine of doom!
Izaya sure can tell that Shizuo is alive and kicking. The vending machine is flying, after all.
For more scenes with moment of awesome, watch the show. XD
